The Calm
What is the word for when you’re inside a moment you know is life-altering — but you have no control over how it plays out?
It’s not fear exactly.
It’s more like a pre-nostalgia. An awareness that this stretch of time is heavier than most. That it’s going to matter later. And that the only thing you really influence is how you react to whatever shows up.
I call it The Calm.
If you’ve ever been skydiving, there’s that split second standing in the doorway of the plane where everything in your body is screaming not to jump. But once you do, the fear disappears. What replaces it isn’t panic — it’s clarity. Almost bliss. The full acceptance of how little control you actually have creates freedom instead of paralysis.
No one is immune to moments like this — irregardless of background. They come for everyone. And when they do, a lot of people check out. We hand control over to the luck of the draw because we’re afraid of the alternative. Afraid to sit alone with who we are without the backstop of other people’s approval, we wait for the world to tell us who we should try to be.
That’s where things get distorted.
Some people succeed and still feel like frauds because they don’t understand why they won. Others fall short and blame the world because they don’t understand why they lost.
My view is simple: fate deals us all a hand.
How we react to what we see on the cards determines how we play.
How we play the hand determines whether we win or lose.
As The Calm gets ready to make another entrance into my life, I’m hoping I’ve learned enough from the first cycle to move through this one with a little more grace.
I don’t know if I’m holding pocket aces.
I don’t know if I’m bluffing.
I just know I’m still at the table.
Calma.
Before I explore how people respond to adversity and rebuild themselves, I needed to tell my own story — unedited.
The only person who’s been there for every chapter is my mom. That’s why she’s my first guest.
We flew to Austin, Texas to sit down and talk honestly about the moments that shaped us, our origin stories, and how each of us learned to Play Life Beautifully.
